Tomcat is a Servlet container (Web server that interacts with Servlets) developed under the Jakarta Project of Apache Software Foundation. In this post we will see How to Install Apache Tomcat on Mac OS X.
Here is what I did to download and install Apache Tomcat 7.0.32 on my Windows 7 local computer. Visit Apache Tomcat home page with a Web browser, and click the ’Download’ link under the ’Tomcat 7.0.32 Released’ section. So I end up founding this article for Wolf Paulus to be a very easy to follow and a helpful set of instructions for properly installing Apache Tomcat on my Mac. So I thought I would share it: Download a binary distribution of the core module: apache-tomcat-7.0.33.tar.gz from here. If there is already a Tomcat folder (presumably from an out-of-date installation), delete all the files already in that folder. Step 2: Extract tomcat archive. Copy all the unstuffed files from the jakarta-tomcat-5.0.27.tar.gz download and put all the files into the Tomcat folder. I just named it Tomcat as it saves some typing in the Terminal. The Apache Tomcat Project is proud to announce the release of version 7.0.106 of Apache Tomcat. This release contains a number of bug fixes and improvements compared to version 7.0.105. Add support for a read idle timeout and a write idle timeout to the WebSocket session via custom properties in the user properties instance associated with the. Download a binary distribution of the core module: apache-tomcat-9.0.35 from here. I picked the tar.gz in Binary Distributions / Core section. Opening/unarchiving the archive will create a new folder structure in your Downloads folder: (btw, this free Unarchiver app is perfect for all kinds of compressed files and superior to the built-in.
Step 1 – Download and unzip the tar.gz.Download a zip of the core module: apache-tomcat-9.0.0.M22.zip from the official website of Apache Tomcat. (Binary Distributions / Core section):
Open/unzip the zip will create a folder structure in your Downloads folder.
Step 2 – install:sudo mkdir /usr/local sudo mv ~/Downloads/apache-tomcat-7.0.* /usr/local sudo ln -s /usr/local/apache-tomcat-7.0.* /Library/Tomcat sudo chown -R <your OSX username> /Library/Tomcat sudo chmod +x /Library/Tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.*/bin/*.sh24sudo mv~/Downloads/apache-tomcat-7.0.*/usr/localsudo ln-s/usr/local/apache-tomcat-7.0.*/Library/Tomcatsudo chmod+x/Library/Tomcat/apache-tomcat-7.0.*/bin/*.sh
Step 3 – start:
Step 4 – stop:
Video InstructionsHomeMac OS XHow to Install Apache Tomcat 9 on Mac OS X
Installing Tomcat 9 on Mac OS X El Capitan is actually quite easy.
The Mac OS X installation process is fairly painless and straight forward, but there are a few rough spots along the way. Follow these step by step instructions to get Tomcat up and running on your Mac OS X machine in no time.Configure Environment VariablesPrerequisite: Java
Download and install the latest Java 8u92 form this link.
The JDK installer package come in an dmg and installs easily on the Mac; and after opening the Terminal app again,
java -version
Now shows something like this:
java version ’1.8.0_66’Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_66-b17)Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.66-b17, mixed mode)
Whatever you do, when opening Terminal and running java -version, you should see something like this, with a version of at least 1.7.x I.e. Tomcat 9.x requires Java 7 or later.
JAVA_HOME is an important environment variable, not just for Tomcat, and it’s important to get it right. To set the JAVA_HOME variable, open a new Terminal window and use the following command to open the system profile for editing. (You can substitute your favorite text editor. We like Vim.):
vi ~/.profile
Once you’ve opened the profile, add the following lines to set the JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME variables:
export JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/Home
export CATALINA_HOME=/Path/To/Tomcat/HomeInstalling Tomcat
1. Download Tomcat from the official website (tomcat.apache.org), select Tar.gz format under the Core section
2. Extract the Tomcat to directory: /Library, in order to facilitate the use, rename the folder to ’Tomcat’
3. Open Terminal, modify folder permissions
sudo chmod 755 /Library/Tomcat/bin/*.sh
4. Press the Enter key, then you will be prompted for a password, enter the administrator password. Then continue with the following command to open the tomcat service
sudo sh startup.sh
5. Open the browser and enter http://localhost:8080/, press Enter.
If you see the Apache Tomcat, this means Tomcat has successfully run
That is it! You should now be able to access Apache Tomcat’s welcome page on http://localhost:8080. If you wish to make stopping Tomcat 9, use this command:Download Tomcat 7 For Macos
sudo sh /Library/Tomcat/bin/shutdown.sh
